Half Life 2:Episode One (PKA: Aftermath)

IGN insider got to sit down and talk to Erik Johnson (Project Manager) from ValveSoftware to talk about there upcoming Half Life 2: Episode One game title. Which is a continuation from where Half Life 2 left off, orginally known as Half Life 2: Aftermath they changed the name to state that this is the first of many episodes to be coming from ValveSoftware. Here some highlights from the conversation.

IGNPC: The end is nigh! Episode One focuses on City 17's imminent destruction following Gordon's assault on The Citadel in Half-Life 2. Is this the final goodbye for this now famous video game city?

Erik Johnson: Much of Episode One deals with the aftermath of your actions in Half-Life 2. As you and Alyx battle through City 17, you'll be forced to deal with the Combine reaction. Episode One will change the face of City 17, but that's not to say you won't be returning.

IGNPC: We've seen some screenshots with different types of creatures and the Episode One trailer mentioned stalkers a bit. What are these guys? Can we expect to see new enemy types in most of the episodes in the future?

Erik Johnson: Stalkers are the result of how the Combine dealt with the residents of City 17 that resisted them. Each Episode will be introducing you to more of the Combine.

IGNPC: Was the recently announced Episode Two originally a part of the Aftermath expansion pack or were these games always conceived as smaller episodes?

Erik Johnson: They've always been thought of as Episodes.

IGNPC: Do you already have a structure of where the story is going with these episodes? Are these episodes planned to eventually lead into a Half-Life 3?

Erik Johnson: Part of the strength of episodic production is being fluid and responding to how customers react to previous episodes. With the Episodes, we're working towards a specific event, and we have a plan for how we get there. Some of the details may change along the way, but the core is etched in stone.

IGNPC: Since the Half-Life 2 episodes don't actually require Half-Life 2 to play them, will there be some sort of "previously on" type of recap for players that might not have played through the previous Half-Life games?

Erik Johnson: We'll be addressing this inside of the Episodes, but not necessarily going back into the Half-Life 1 or Half-Life 2 storylines given their size. At the end of the Episode One there will be a short teaser for Episode Two.

IGNPC: How often are you hoping to have new episodes for gamers to play through?

Erik Johnson: Episode Two has been in production for some time, and we'll be talking about it in more detail immediately after Episode One is made available.

interesting, for the whole story you can check out the article on IGN.

NeverWinter Nights 2, IGN update

If your unaware Atari is letting Obsidian Entertainment make Neverwinter Nights 2 which is actually a branch of Bioware. IGN was there at a pre E3 meeting (lucky) to talk about the upcoming title. Apparently Obsidian took some of the KOTOR2 ideas of influencing your companions towards good and evil and are putting it into NWN2, which should be interesting. The game does look alot better than the original (but of course). Some things added to the game will appeal to the od fans, such as just clicking on the compainions name will allow you to control them. Alot of the same ideas apply from the first one, D&D rules, Customizing charaters, All the same races, and sub races as well as putting a bit of background behind your character depending on your race and allignment. In my opinion the engine looks like Starwars Galaxies if it was made today, Visually it's appealing for todays standerds but could be alot more but no one is complaining. They also have isometric view (though its fully 3D) and then World Of Warcraft kind of view as they described it. So incase you didn't know there is a teeny update on NWN2 hopefully it will be good as the last one and they also have full Mod support just like the orginal.

Wii Think it's going to be big

If know one knew, Nintendo decided to divide up the Kodak Theater for there E3 debue this year into Sections by naming the sections thinks relating to Nintendo games. Some tickets have Hyrule on them while others say Yoshi's Island and very special one says Mushroom Kingdom. Why might you ask? Well back in December on IGN forums someone posted a topic titled Kodak Theater = Mushroom Kingdom, the post went on to talk about plans from Nintendo and the person writing wouldn't release how he knew all this information but said that we could probably guess. The post was quickly deleated and thought of as a fake untill recently. As you can already tell the name of the forum clearly shows that this person has some inside information wheather it's all true or not is yet to be seen. The post was latter dug up and here is what it had to say.

"I have followed the rumors and speculation on this board regarding Nintendo’s “Revolution” since its inception.

It is at times torturous to see the most dedicated base of any gaming company have to resort to gossip and guesses as to what to expect from Nintendo’s next generation offering.

It is for this reason that I have decided to share.

I cannot offer anything to you in terms of my identity. I cannot offer anything in the way of proving what I am saying to you is factual. However, you will ultimately find that you need not worry who I am, for all I say will come to pass. But I suspect you know my name…

So here’s the scoop. I’m tired of watching you beautiful fans endure the torture of knowing so little, so I will share with you enough to help you understand the magnitude of what’s coming without saying enough to reveal who I am.

I’ll say this before I begin spilling the proverbial beans. Remember 1985? Remember when saying “Nintendo” meant video games in general? This is what Nintendo is aiming to recapture, and believe me, they will!

Let’s start with a question:1.

Why have we yet to see even a glimpse of what a “Revolution” game will look like? Most seem to assume this is because Nintendo does not want the focus of their next generation games to be on their graphics. This is not entirely wrong, just a little uninformed. That being said, the graphics are essentially the same as a souped up Xbox. What you all are ignoring is that the graphics for the Xbox360 are arguably only the same as a souped up Xbox as well. Graphically, in terms of traditional graphics, the systems are equal. In terms of presentation, you will be astonished by what the Revolution holds, and it is indeed the final secret Mr. Miyamoto hinted at. Prepare to see games in a way you never imagined, and you don’t need a silly helmet or visor to experience it. As a matter of fact, a video demonstration of what “Revolution” can do circulated the internet weeks or months before E3, and then conspicuously disappeared. Such a sneaky little box! I’ll leave the rest to you!

Well…I can’t resist.

A final hint…

Think hard about the controller and what type of graphical presentation would suit it best! It’s so easy! Oh, and the controller is indeed meant to attract the casual gamer, because they'll so badly want to experience what they're seeing!

2. “Use the right side of your brain!”As many of you have correctly stated, the right side of your brain is the creative side. So what was Reggie hinting at? Again, it’s so easy I don’t need to say it! You’re given all of the components you need, and some general structure. The rest my friends, is up to you!

3. Indeed a revolution, but in code name only. It’s 1985 all over again…

4. Wi-Fi will open doors you never would have predicted. It’s all so obvious though if you think about it, but it’s so hard for me to say without saying too much! If you’ve figured out what I’ve already hinted at, picture how the ability to download monthly offerings will that much more enhance your experience!

5. The Classics. Many for free just for joining…one free a month…Itunes pricing per each additional first party title. Third parties will bundle 3-5 each with a new game purchase.

6. The price is right…you’ll just have to trust me!

7. Kodak Theater = Mushroom Kingdom!

I’ve said enough. What I’ve shared should be enough to get you all cooled down a bit.Never underestimate Nintendo."

In one of the comment's it was posted that this might be the video that the poster was talking about.

I can't even possible start to speculate what this might mean for the Wii but we will find out shortly since E3 kicks off on the May 9th. Hope to bring you more information soon

Wii Understand Nintendo

Well If you haven't heard already Nintendo's Codename "Revolution" console has finally been given a proper name. Wii pronounced like We not Why which what I heard alot of people calling it. I have read alot of newspapers and alot of articles talking about this name some game sites and blog sites which hosted plenty of information about other games and what's going on in the media have been blogged full of Nintendo's Wii. Alot of people don't like it and thought that "Revolution" was its official name but it's not and wont be. Most people were happy with the name though I can say personally that "Revolution" was a good name but Wii is very Nintendo Name. Though I am not sure why they are going with the whole i thing. ("iPod""intell Viiv"). The name is pefect as far as I am concerned and Nintendo said boldly when they first annouced it that it will stay as Wii, I think they understand that is sounds a bit wierd at first but Wii think it will grow on Nintendo Fans.

Xbox vs Revolution vs PS3

About a month ago there was a post on engadget about the price of the revolution being below $300 dollars and there was alot of argument out there and still is about these 3 consoles. I have studied the specs and wasn't there but might as well been since I watched the entire E3 show and learned all the specs of these systems. So I have come up with some predictions on the console war and I can't take sides untill the system's are competely done with in order to say which one is the best.

Aight well most of you are looking at the shear raw power of the xbox 360 and PS3 Might I remind everyone that, that power is still untapped. Ya sure there will be alot of sequals coming out for the xbox 360 and PS3 but that will be almost it. Why might you ask? How about the fact your programming for 3 multithreaded Processors or a Cell Processor with 7 Threads. I am not saying that it's not possible but I would think and I am sure we will see alot of New Titles come out for the revolution because it doesn't try anything Insane, when I first heard of the Xbox 360 and PS3's Power behind It I was in amazment also but let's face the fact's that with that much power and well since it's never been really done before we can be sure for a ride of Unpredictability.

Everything I have seen launch for the Xbox 360 really hasn't impressed me at all, Perfect Dark Look's really no better than an Xbox Game.I know some might think otherwise but if you look deep inside you will realize that there is nothing Amazing about it's Graphics. And Microsoft Even said the games coming out for the Xbox 360 with launch will not harness the full power of the xbox 360. Coupled with the problem on launch and the somewhat High price well what can I say it seem's as though Microsoft and Sony have Overstepped a bit. They brought to much unharnessed power to the market and the PS3 is so expensive I don't know who will be able to afford it on launch except those who save specifically for it or have plenty of extra Cash. Nintendo on the other hand has stuck with Awesome Power that they can use and because there not trying anything diffrent game developers will be able to create games easier quicker and look good for the Revolution. The thing is only time will tell exactly what will happen but I am sure that Nintend will debut perhaps before or after PS3 doesn't matter the games will look amazing and we might see some Awesome new titles come to the System. Plus coupling of the new controller brings all kinds of amazing new idea's for game developers. I think what we will see is Sony competely dropping out of the whole thing because to expensive system there profits are constantly low lately and the PSP isn't really doing as well as they would have hoped. So I am pretty sure you will see em drop out, I would be suprised if they didn't.Though Microsoft is trigger happy and brought the system out with more power than most people can harness I think they have a good fan base and good foothold in the gaming market to make it to the next Console war.

As for Nintendo, well they have been hear for a long time as despite what most people think there going to be hear for a while longer. Nintendo Didn't try to buy into making a system with more power then they could harness so they setteled for Tommorow's technology instead of trying to re-invent tommorow's technology by making have more power than is possible to use. The only thing that I don't know how it will do is the Controller, it seems like an amazing idea and yet I don't know how it will do. I just know that Nintendo was successfull for all these years and I am sure they will be succesfull for the years to come. The price they have set with coupled with everything else will surely make this console a winner in the war Microsoft Kicked off in November.

Like I said above I hope that revolution controller is good because alot of people are counting on it. I think that http://www.myextralife.com/archive.php?date=2005-09-26 that comic is pretty much shows you exactly what is going through every nintendo fan's mind.
